Sustainable Style That Won't Break the Bank
|
October 2008 |
We just wrapped Fashion Week in New York and LA and are pleased to report that conscious fashion is no longer a trend--it's alive and well and setting the bar high for designers far and wide.
To see some of the hottest sustainable styles hitting the runway for fall, check out our Conscious Catwalk episode.
With the current state of both the economy and the environment, the most conscious fashion choice is to reduce, reuse, and repurpose the clothes that are already hanging in your closet. And though the stock market is going topsy turvy, it doesn't mean you can't put your best fashion foot forward--without breaking the bank. If you're looking for a cheap and chic way to re-vamp your wardrobe, watch our Swap-O-Rama-Rama episode, which will teach you how to update your look with nothing more than a few bucks and a little creativity. And if you must buy something new, why not make a purchase that will last a lifetime and help the environment? Scroll down for a couple of our favorite eco-fashion picks for fall. And let's not forget about our favorite obsession: shoes! To personally experience the Art of Sustainable Shoemaking, don't miss our visit with Annie Mohaupt, former architect and creator of top-selling conscious brand Mohop Shoes.
Stay fabulous and keep putting your best foot forward!

Fall Fashion Favorite Hess Natur's Dhoti Pant
Since tailored pants are the rage for fall, our favorite pick this season is these Moroccan-inspired dhoti drop pants designed by Miguel Adrover for Hess Natur. They're made from flowing 100% wool, which is super warm and long-lasting. Given their unique cut they can double as pants or a skirt, and can be worn with almost anything in your closet.
Cheap and Eco-Chic
Venice Beach Swap-o-Rama
Challenge: Finding great clothes on a budget.
Solution: Swap-o-Rama-Rama, an ingenious treasure-hunting event where you can literally swap clothes with other fashionistas looking to do the same. If an item's a little big or needs updating, you can give it TLC at one of several expert crafting stations set up to screenprint, applique, and tailor your "new" clothes to your heart's content!
Cost: $5 bucks, a bag of old clothes, and your imagination. What a bargain! Click here to watch us get our swap on! |
The Art of Sustainable Shoemaking: Mohop
For a shoe collection that rivals Imelda Marcos' but won't increase your eco-footprint, try on a pair of Mohop's, created by Chicago-based Annie Mohaupt. Her unique designs are the product of ingenuity, sustainability, and lots of handy woodworking. Watch fashion--and innovation--in the making by clicking here. |
Fig = Fashionable Kids Organic Style For Little People
Why should mom and dad have all the fun when it comes to eco-fashion? The little people in your life have delicate immune systems and are more sensitive to toxins like pesticides, which are used to grow traditional cotton. With sustainable kids' fashion lines on the market like the 100% organic cotton line from Fig (from the eco-edgy designers of Twice Shy Clothing), you have no excuse not to swap out Jr.'s toxic wardrobe for the latest natural duds. As you can see, Bianca's 1-year old twin nieces Brianna and Brookie Bennett can't seem to get enough of their favorite Fig playclothes. Does baby want more choices? Check out When I Grow Up I Will for organic tee's for kids with positive affirmations like "Plant a Tree", or Chapter One Organics, for fun organic clothes that also give back to lower-income families in need. |
Vegan Accessories From English Retreads
Michael loves this bi-fold vintage rubber wallet made by Boulder-based English Retreads. It has four credit card pockets, a bill holder and cool circular cut-outs that let you peek through to your credit cards. It's made out of old truck tires, so it's sure to last a lifetime and is a great vegan alternative to leather. Like what you see? Forward this e-mail to a friend and you could win their Mini Luxe tote. |
S'09 Sneak Preview
Wild Style: LA Fashion Week
We're thrilled to report that LA's celebrated Fashion Week confirmed what we already knew: conscious fashion is here to stay. This spring, be on the look-out for Leila Hafzi's stunning Utopia collection, which proves that sustainable style and bold colors do mix. And yes, that is a real-live wolf strutting the catwalk with a model wearing Ecoskin at the Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show, which dazzled Smashbox Studio's main tent on closing night. Produced by the one-and-only Mikey Koffman's Gallery LA, this show also featured gorgeous designs by Emily Factor, M the Movement, Lilikoi, and even a dress made from recycled glass by Smart Jewelry! And of course, the after-party was off the hook. Want to see for yourself? Stay tuned for our spring '09 fashion update--coming soon. |
Take Care of Your Threads
Once you've swapped and shopped sustainably, why dry clean your clothes with toxic chemicals like perchloroethylene (a.k.a. "perc") that can hurt your body and the planet? Instead, drop off your threads at a dry cleaners that uses Green Earth Dry Cleaning products--which are actually better for your clothes--and 100% recycled, recyclable hangers like Ditto Hangers. When you get home, showcase the rest of your clothes on sleek BGreen hangers by Eco-Wood, which are made from sustainable 100% bamboo.
